Morf?

Anybody get morf to work? It just seems to mix the harmonic profiles together;
I don't hear any motion at all.

From what I've gathered, the second and third sets in the group would have to
be very different from each other for the motion to be audible, since it just
'wiggles' between those two to create the motion effect. (I have a Korg
Wavestation, and this seems similar to the Vector Envelopes it can make, except
that the WS uses mixing to achieve what the K5000s does directly via
interpolation of additive harmonic groups. The WS does the same 'wiggling between'
patches, though you can select more variations in what is included and
their timings.)
More information would be nice about this thing. Of course, being a glutton for
punishment, I'm converting .wav files to additive via SoundDiver and trying to
morf between them. I'll let you know how I do when I actually get somewhere with
this!

Morf!

Hi Leiter and all fans of the ultimate additive synthesis experience!
You should know a few facts that are not explicitly mentioned in the K5000 manual:
MORF creates new DHE values from existing (imported) DHL values, nothing else.
The morf is calculated for the selected ADD source only, so if the morf is to be
applied to all sources, you have to repeatedly select a source, edit the
parameters and press EXEC.
Once the morf is executed, you can change back to NORMAL mode and visually check
the results, for example in multiview mode. Switch to MORF again
to make adjustments as often as you like.
The DHL values of the target patch are not changed, so the morf is best to be
heard if you set the DHL spectrum to "flat". You can manipulate the DHL
values later, in NORMAL mode.
The DHE values of the origin patches are not taken into account for the morf,
so the DHE curves of the origin patches may confuse you when you make
your selection. Better listen to the sources by copying them to a dummy patch
that does not use DHE.
The 4 morf time values are correctly transformed into the 4 DHE rate values.
(Here is the time/rate calculator we have been looking for! But how can we
use it from outside? Any ideas?) The morf drawing would be clearer with an
additional "Phase 0" (with all zero levels) on the left side, so that you could see
the 4 transition times: Attack,Decay1,Decay2,Release.
Why does nothing of this information occur in the manual? Ask Kawai...
Happy Morfing!

I'm specifying four harmonic level sources and four times, but it doesn't seem
to be executing the Morf. Do you use sound diver?

No, I don't use SoundDiver... I don't know what's wrong with your morf
experiments, mine were successful.
Have you selected the right 'origin' source numbers and patch numbers? One
gets easily confused with that. Strangely, these patches have to come from the
same memory bank as the one being edited.
The DHL spectra of the 4 selected origin patches must appear in the 4 DHE
phases' level spectra after morf execution. Verify that in the DHE/Multiview
menu! Note that DHE spectra have a level range from 0 to 63 only. DHL values
between 64 and 127 are mapped to this range, lower values are cut off. A
DHE level scale numbered from 64 to 127 would have made more sense.
One more recommendation: It's more convenient to prepare a special "test bench"
patch: copy the desired (origin) sources first to sources #1...4 of the test
patch; source #5 (the 'target') is reserved for the morf. Sources #1...4 get
flat DHE curves, source #5 gets a flat DHL spectrum. The target source is muted
in order to pre-listen and edit the 4 origin sources without having to switch
between patches. Once they are ready to be morfed, mute them, select and
un-mute source #5, execute the morf (with #1...4 of the same patch set as
origin sources) and check the result.
Hope that helps...

Aha! SoundDiver thinks they have to come from the A bank; fine if you're in
the A bank, but I've been working in D. Thanks!
