Attention - a while ago the operation system files on the Kawai US server were
corrupt! (Are they still?) You better take those from the Kawai Australia
server.

I just tried those K5000S patch banks and got a "Size error". Has anyone else
tried them? I wrote back to the Kawaius webmaster. Looks like there might
be some new sounds in that bonus set - collection 2 or something like that.
Somebody said that the system files used to be corrupt. Are we experiencing a
similar phenomenon?

Yes, the files COLLECT2.KAA and COLECT2M.KCA are corrupt, as usual on the Kawai
US server. (You better visit the Kawai Australia website for system updates.)
Guess what happened to the files: All bytes '0A' are replaced by '0D,0A'. This is
typical for certain text formats ('0A' is: ASCII line feed, '0D' is: ASCII
carriage return). Obviously, someone at Kawai actually handles binary files with
a word processor!!! How would you call that?
You don't believe it? I wrote a small converter program to undo the replacement.
The files were o.k. then! I'll mail them tomorrow to Kenji. If he puts them on
his website, he will surely tell us. Download them, listen to the 59 brandnew
sounds and enjoy!

Corrupt KawaiUS file fix

I have now uploaded to my site Jens Groh's fix for the problem some of us have
been having with the patch sets available for download on the Kawai US
site. When we downloaded the sounds and tried to load them into the K5000,
we got an error message.
I have tested it on the Collection 2 sounds, and after running the convert.exe
program on the patch banks, they loaded fine. While it works for me and Jens,
that is really the extent of our testing and so any use of this program is of
course completely at your own risk. Jens explains what it does in her reply to
"Forwarded message from Kawai US" below (also in the "Corrupt Files on Kawai
US site" digest) and also includes the source code.
Please note that WE HAVE NOT TESTED THESE ON THE SYSTEM FILES. So if you try
to run this program on the K5000 system files and then your K5000 blows up
it's not our fault. We recommend downloading the system files from the
Australian site instead.
Syntax: Basically, if you want to convert "collect2.kaa" you need to create
a new file, which we will call "c2.kaa". Here is the syntax:
convert -icollect2.kaa -oc2.kaa
The program then creates a new file called c2.kaa which will then be the
repaired file (collect2.kaa will remain unchanged).
Sorry I couldn't put the fixed patch sets directly on my site, but I don't
think Kawai would like that - especially since they would be modified...

Oh, I forget to mention, the file is in the Patch Archive under "patches by Jens
Groh."
It actually does belong there too - it's the OTHER kind of patch! :)

Hi,
After downloading the collect2 files from kawai-us, i put them on a floppy, loaded
them into the K5K and it worked OK.
Probably the kawai-us site corrected the error ...

Hmmm...
I just talked to Kawai and I'm pretty sure they haven't changed anything. What
platform are you using? I'm having a problem on a Windows PC running
Netscape Communicator. The Kawai people thought it might be Netscape's fault.

i've experienced the same. It wouldn't load in my k5000 either, but i've spoken
to another k5000 user and THE SAME set loaded fine at his k5000. Maybe
they don't use system 3.0. I will check with that other user to see if we can
find what causes the problem.

Hi all!
Here are astonishing news for you Netscape users! (I use Navigator 3.0 with both
Windows 3.11 and NT 4.0)
Look into the directory (...\)Netscape\Cache on your disk after having downloaded
the patches file (e.g. COLLECT2.KAA) from Kawai US! You will find,
among many other files, one file with the extension ".KAA". It has the correct
size, and no excess "0D" bytes at some known places! I suppose the file is OK
though I could not test it up to now. You can copy the file and rename it to
"COLLECT2.KAA". (If there are several KAA files take the one with the latest
date.)
Well, now I'm convinced, too, that it's some Netscape problem or so. I apologize
for having blamed Kawai.
Who is going to solve the problem?

Those "corrupt" Kawai US patch set files
Friday, 27-Mar-98 01:24:43
153.37.15.7 writes:
Greetings, Kenji!
We have been testing our file downloads ever since we began getting messages
that people were having problems downloading operating systems and sound
files from our site and we have found what we think is the cause of everyone's
problems.
Files should be downloaded directly to a floppy disk formatted on the K5000.
If you download a file onto the hard drive of your PC, Windows 95 and
current versions of DOS will make minute changes in the file. That's why the
message you sent me in January from Jens Groh stated that he thought we were
working with our files using a word processor. Troy and I have tested the
downloads again and again, and they work fine if they are downloaded to a K5000
formatted disk.
We have added notes to this effect on the download page of our site and hope
that this takes care of any problems people are still having.
Regards,
Andrew Spuur
