SoundDiver problem
 Friday, 06-Nov-98 23:18:59

      140.254.113.64 writes:

Yet more SoundDiver questions... I saved a new patch in memory that I edited at the
K5k instead of SoundDiver. Now when I try to request from the K5k I get the error
      message:

      "SysEx Communication Error
      Checksum Error for K5000S"

I've checked, and SoundDiver sees my MIDI interface, so that's not the problem. On
the positive side, it seems like I can still edit the patches it recognizes. Any
      suggestions?

Also, in the harmonic envelope graphics, there are two colored blocks (green and
black/grey) that look like they should be adjustable. I can only seem to manipulate
the green block, and then only as a full group. What menus am I not seeing to
      edit this stuff?

I figured that out. I can also request info from the K5k in SoundDiver one patch at
a time, but still not request all the sounds at once without getting the error. I'm
also having trouble deleting patches from SoundDiver and having it take effect
      in the K5k memory.

      Advice is appreciated.

As far as deleting patches in the K5000, once you've deleted the patch in
SoundDiver, I think you will need to send the entire bank to the synth. That
      should work.

When requesting banks from the K5000, you must first highlight the entire bank in
SoundDiver. The software will only retrieve what is highlighted. You probably
already know that, but I thought I'd mention it anyway!

As to your sysex error, I had a strange thing happen to me with SoundDiver and my

crash. I had the same strange behavior in my Wavestation module. I found
that to get it to work, I had to highlight the whole bank, then hold the CTRL key
down and click to un-highlite one entry (usually the last). Then, it worked every
      time.

While we're at it, how do I get SoundDiver to read new KA1 files into an existing

The interface -- the Opcode MQX-32M MIDI interface -- may be the problem. Go to
      the SoundDiver site:

      http://www.emagic.se

and write a note to the author, Michael Hayden. He's indicated on several
occasions that many interfaces won't work properly. The biggest reason is their
not being 32-bit cards, since SoundDiver is written to optimize 32-bit coding.
Commonly, updating the driver (from Opcode's website http://www.opcode.com) fixes
things as well. Also, try putting the K5000 on as the only thing in the interface
(no thrus anywhere). I have a Music Quest/Opcode PC MIDI CARD in the portable PC,
and it dislikes sending large sysex to the Wavestations through/via the also-Opcode
8-Port/SE (my midi-patcher, or multi-port router, if you will, an interface with 8
MIDI in's and 8 MIDI outs.)

There's no reason why you can't find the problem. Fret not -- everybody has
      these problems! ;-)

System Volume

upon power up? Or is 127 the default and I better make sure my volume levers are
      turned down before I play?

P.S. Sam Ash of West Hollywood had two K5K's left as of today, Sat. December 26th.

Yes, I noticed that the K5K not only resets its volume and other basic settings to
defaults (such as Local On), but also transmits 127 values for controllers 7 and 1
and maybe some others, and program Zero, resetting any machines set to
receive from the K5K (all of them, in my case!) I got around it by placing a
little startup sequence in a handy place on my sequencer that I load and send off
whenever I power up the system. This serves to accomplish many more things now
than simply place my K5K back to a state I desire, but also sends several sysex
commands. So, a problem with the K5K led me to a better solution for working with
      my setup as a whole.

gives me a Sysex error that I must abort out of. All other banks A, E, F and Multi,

there and I have to either esc out of the request or reboot (50/50). Any ideas

More OS upgrade Ideas
 Wednesday, 13-Jan-99 08:15:56

      Hi All!!! :o)
Just upgraded (with no problems .... phew) to OS 4.0 ... some lovely new patches!!
& I like the fact that they weren't stingy by loading a 100 of them in the A bank
alone!!..... However a couple of questions....

      1) It would have been a good Idea to have the synth REMEMBER it's state when you
power down, ready to continue when you restart ... ie .. If your in an edit,
remember what page & point your're at .. or at least simply remember which patch
or Multi you were last using .... Afterall, a lot if not most other synths do this
... I even remember my old meager DX11 capable of this....

      2) I have also noticed in the midi setup that, granted it DOES remember which
basic midi channel you set the synth to .. but on power cycling, it FORGETS if you
set 'Local' to OFF .... annoying, when you are in a multi synth setup, having it
clang away until you have to continually reset the 'local' setting every time you
      power up .. GGGRRRR ;o)

So ..... with these in mind, do KAWAI intend to continue to bring out OS upgrades
& support this amazing synth.. or is 4 it!!??? ... IF so ... will Kawai release a
full technical spec etc., so that the MADDER techy individuals umong us will be
able to grace us with their own bespoke OS features based on OUR feedback ....
NOW THERES AN IDEA!!!? (ANY BUDDING PROGRAMMING EXPERTS UP FOR THE CHALLANGE TO
      KEEP THIS BEAST GROWING?) ...

BTW ... I'll post some of the wierd & wonderful music I've created using my K5K
soon for you all to enjoy .... (Very Goa tranceish ....)

Probably the best solution is to send it to an independent out and pan it in your
